Marriage registration in Laos
How to Marry a Lao Citizen: Marriage Registration in Laos for Foreigners
Yes, a foreigner can legally marry a Lao citizen in Laos. It is a paperwork process, not a ceremony: you attend 2 short interviews, the process takes about 6 to 12 months, and it costs from $2,200 with SV Consultancy, all Lao government fees included. You receive an official Lao Marriage Certificate, recognized by embassies.
Can a foreigner marry a Lao citizen?
Yes, whatever your nationality. We register couples from the USA, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Lithuania, Finland, New Zealand, Taiwan, China, Malaysia and many more. You just need to meet these conditions:
- Both partners are at least 18 years old.
- Both partners are legally single. If you are divorced, bring your final divorce decree.
- You can talk to each other in a common language. The police check this at the interview.
- Chinese citizens must hold an LA-B2 visa.
Laos does not recognize same-sex marriage.
How much does it cost to get married in Laos?

Lao documents do not need MOFA or embassy legalization for a marriage in Laos. Don't spend money on it.
How do I legalize my documents?
It depends on where you come from. Pick your case:
There is a Lao embassy for my country
Your national authority (apostille or legalization, either works), then the Lao embassy (for example Berlin, Stockholm or Hanoi).
There is no Lao embassy for my country
Your own embassy closest to Laos (Bangkok, Hanoi or Vientiane) authenticates them. Thai embassy stamps are not accepted.
American, Canadian or German
Your embassy in Vientiane handles it on site. We book the appointment and prepare you before you go.
Your embassy says the approval letter "does not exist" for your country? It happens. We draft a sworn statement (affidavit) that you sign in front of your embassy. It has worked for many nationalities.
Save time: send us scans first so we can check everything before you travel. Originals are required later. If legalization abroad takes 4 to 6 weeks, order 2 originals so we can start with the second set.
Not sure your documents are right? Send us photos or scans on WhatsApp. We check them for free before you spend money on legalization.
Check my documentsWhat do you receive at the end?
You receive an official Lao Marriage Certificate with its marriage registration record, issued by the Lao authorities and recognized by embassies.
- Proof of your marriage for every Lao office and foreign embassy.
- Required for the SP-B3 spouse visa.
- The first step toward Permanent Residency after 2 years.
Do we need a traditional Lao wedding ceremony?
No. Marriage registration is legal paperwork only. A Baci or a wedding party is a family choice, with no legal value.
The only "ceremony" in the file is the engagement record, signed by the village chief. You can celebrate anywhere you like, before or after the registration: in your partner's village, in Vientiane or in your home country.
Obtaining a Lao Single Status Certificate
Planning to marry in Thailand or another country instead? Read this first.
- A marriage done abroad is not recognized in Laos, and having it recognized later is long and complicated.
- The Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs normally does not legalize a Lao single status certificate for a marriage abroad.
Every situation is different. Get in touch with us before you book anything, and we will tell you what is possible in your case.
Laos Citizenship by Marriage
Marrying a Lao citizen does not give you Lao citizenship. It gives you the right to live in Laos with your spouse, in two stages:
Right after the marriage: SP-B3 spouse visa
- $460 per year ($330 for 6 months)
- About 19 to 21 working days
- Stay permit included, no work permit
After 2 years of marriage: Permanent Residency
- Resident ID card and entry in the Lao family book
- No more yearly visas or border runs
- $6,500, 1 to 2 years, 2 interviews
How do I use my Lao marriage certificate in my country?
Most countries ask you to translate, legalize and register a marriage done abroad. Your Lao certificate also makes your partner's visa much easier.
- Canada: used for spouse sponsorship applications.
- Malaysia: authenticated by the Lao embassy in Malaysia, then re-registered at the National Registration Department (JPN).
- Europe, USA, China: used for spouse and family visas.
We translate and legalize your certificate (Ministry of Justice and MOFA) for your embassy.
