# How to Marry a Lao Citizen: Marriage Registration in Laos for Foreigners

*By Jeremie Robert, reviewed by Sikongkeo Inthavong (founder, since 2005). Updated 28 October 2026.*

**Yes, a foreigner can legally marry a Lao citizen in Laos.** It is a paperwork process, not a ceremony: you attend **2 short interviews**, the process takes **about 6 to 12 months**, and it costs **from $2,200** with SV Consultancy, all Lao government fees included. You receive an **official Lao Marriage Certificate**, recognized by embassies.

Key facts: from $2,200 · 6 to 12 months once all documents are ready · 2 interviews of 30 to 60 minutes · no long stay needed · all 17 provinces.

## Can a foreigner marry a Lao citizen?

Yes, whatever your nationality. Conditions:

- Both partners are at least 18 years old.
- Both are legally single. If divorced, bring the final divorce decree.
- You can talk to each other in a common language (checked at the interview).
- Chinese citizens must hold an LA-B2 visa.

Laos does not recognize same-sex marriage.

## How much does it cost to get married in Laos?

The price depends on the Lao partner's home province (the first interview takes place there). It includes all Lao government fees. Rates are fixed.

| Price | Province of the Lao partner |
|---|---|
| $2,200 | Vientiane Capital |
| $2,400 | Vientiane Province, Bolikhamxay |
| $2,600 | Sayaboury, Luang Prabang, Khammouane, Houaphanh |
| $2,700 | Oudomxay, Xiangkhouang |
| $2,800 | Savannakhet |
| $3,000 | Phongsaly, Bokeo, Luang Namtha, Champasak, Sekong, Salavan |
| On request | Attapeu, Xaisomboun |

Payment in 3 steps: 50% at contract signing, 30% after interview 1, 20% when the certificate is issued (Vientiane Capital: $1,100 / $660 / $440). Cash, international bank transfer or Western Union. No credit cards.

**Included:** all Lao government fees; all forms and the Lao partner's application file; Lao translation of the documents in the file; booking both interviews and following up with every office; help with embassy appointments in Vientiane; explanations in Lao for the partner and family.

**Not included:** home-country documents and their legalization; the village chief (Nai Ban) signature; travel and hotel for the interviews; the Lao partner's birth certificate (about 200,000 to 400,000 LAK); later translation of the certificate into another language (for example $200 for Chinese).

## How long does marriage registration take in Laos?

About 6 months, up to 12 months in some provinces, counted from the day all documents are ready.

1. Complete file to interview 1 booked: at least 1 month.
2. Interview 1 at the Provincial Police, in the Lao partner's home province (cannot be moved to Vientiane).
3. Provincial approval (2 to 3 weeks), then Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1 to 2 weeks).
4. Interview 2 at the Department of Foreigner Control, Vientiane: 1 to 2 months after interview 1.
5. Marriage certificate issued about 3 months after interview 2.

Real example (2026): American client, partner from Savannakhet. Arrived 6 August, interview 1 on 10 September, interview 2 on 29 October, certificate expected in February. About 6 months in total.

**Do I need to stay in Laos the whole time?** No. Come for the interviews only. Each lasts 30 to 60 minutes; plan 2 to 3 days in the province. To do both in one trip, plan 1 to 2 months. You can leave after interview 2. You need a valid visa while in Laos (LA-B2 for long stays, then SP-B3 after the marriage).

## Step by step

1. Free check on WhatsApp: nationality, partner's province, documents you have. Reply within 24 hours.
2. Contract and first payment (50%): personal checklist, forms and examples of embassy letters.
3. Prepare the documents: you legalize 2 documents at home; your partner gathers their papers; SV Consultancy prepares forms, translations and the engagement record.
4. Interview 1 at the Provincial Police (both partners). Second payment (30%).
5. Interview 2 at the Department of Foreigner Control, Vientiane (both partners).
6. Certificate issued about 3 months later. Last payment (20%).

Interview tips: long trousers and a formal shirt; bring original documents and passport; both partners must be present and able to talk to each other.

## What documents do I need to marry in Laos?

Only 2 foreign documents need legalization: the single status certificate and the police clearance.

**Foreign partner:** certificate of single status (legalize, recent, often valid 6 months); police clearance (legalize); approval letter from your embassy closest to Laos (certificate of no impediment, note verbale or similar); proof of income (1 month bank statement or pension); proof of residence (driver's licence or ID with address); copies of passport and ID; 18 photos 3 x 4 cm, white background, formal clothes; biography form (template provided: addresses and jobs for about 8 years, religion); divorce decree if previously married; LA-B2 visa for Chinese citizens only.

**Lao partner:** passport, ID card (old model fine if valid) and family book; original birth certificate from the district police (a relative can apply); 18 photos; marriage application and engagement record (prepared by SV Consultancy, signed by the village chief); criminal record (free in some areas). Lao documents do not need MOFA or embassy legalization.

**How to legalize:**
- Lao embassy for your country: national authority (apostille or legalization), then the Lao embassy.
- No Lao embassy for your country: your own embassy closest to Laos (Bangkok, Hanoi or Vientiane). Thai embassy stamps are not accepted.
- American, Canadian or German: done at your embassy in Vientiane.

If your embassy says the approval letter does not exist for your country, SV Consultancy drafts an affidavit that you sign in front of your embassy. Send scans first for a free check.

## What do you receive at the end?

An official Lao Marriage Certificate with its marriage registration record, recognized by Lao offices and foreign embassies. Required for the SP-B3 spouse visa and the first step toward Permanent Residency.

## Do we need a traditional Lao wedding ceremony?

No. Registration is legal paperwork only. A Baci or wedding party has no legal value. The file only includes an engagement record signed by the village chief. Celebrate anywhere, before or after.

## Obtaining a Lao Single Status Certificate

A marriage done abroad (for example in Thailand) is not recognized in Laos, and recognizing it later is long and complicated. The Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs normally does not legalize a Lao single status certificate for a marriage abroad. Contact SV Consultancy before booking anything.

## Laos Citizenship by Marriage

Marrying a Lao citizen does not give Lao citizenship.

- Right after the marriage: SP-B3 spouse visa, $460 per year ($330 for 6 months), about 19 to 21 working days, stay permit included, no work permit.
- After 2 years of marriage: Permanent Residency, resident ID card and entry in the Lao family book, $6,500, 1 to 2 years, 2 interviews.

## How do I use my Lao marriage certificate in my country?

Most countries ask you to translate, legalize and register a marriage done abroad. Examples: Canada (spouse sponsorship), Malaysia (Lao embassy authentication then re-registration at JPN), Europe, USA and China (spouse and family visas). SV Consultancy translates and legalizes the certificate (Ministry of Justice and MOFA).
